Supporting the existence of a common theme to different countries, Portugal celebrates in 2017 the European Heritage Days under the theme "Heritage and Nature: people, places and stories".
The relation between Heritage and Nature is the genesis of human settlements. Landscape patterns, architecture, urbanism, ways of life, cultures, economies and tradition all derive from this same basis. Crossing multiple expressions, this relation is a vast source of knowledge, creativity and recreation, thus providing great potential for social and economic development. Changes in paradigms and values, the rapid development of information and communication technologies, the increasing possibilities of crossing different fields of knowledge open up new challenges and new perspectives. On the other hand, less controlled urbanization processes, exponential growth of tourism, climate change resulting from global warming and the resulting epiphenomena - floods, fires, land displacement, coastal erosion – oblige us to reflect on how to preserve and value this relationship for a future that we need to be sustainable.
This is the pertinence, if not urgency, of this year's theme.
Once again, the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture invited civil society and official and private entities to organize activities around this theme.
In response to this invitation, on September 22nd, 23rd and 24th 1500 activities will take place in Portugal in 160 municipalities, promoted by 803 entities.
