For centuries, water power has been the main energy source of the Idrija mine. From the beginning of the operation of the mine, they have made great efforts to provide sufficient quantities of water that has driven all major mining facilities on the surface, until the introduction of steam engines in the 19th century. A completely different role was played by the water in the Idrija cave. Many water intrusion into the pit was a real mining disaster. The water was filled with ditches, groves and holes. Probably in no other industry in human history water had such a dual role; it was a blessing and at the same time a curse! Številni vdori vode v jamo, so predstavljali pravo rudarsko katastrofo.
