St. Stephan in Braunau wurde von 1439 bis 1466 zur Zeit der Spätgotik erbaut. Baumeister Stefan Krumenauer errichtete einen dreischiffigen Staffelbau. Durch Anbau von Zunft- und Handwerkskapellen, nördlich und südlich, entstanden zwei weitere „Schiffe“. Die Inneneinrichtung umfasst Stücke der Gotik, Meisterarbeiten des Barock von Martin Zürn und den aus der Neugotik stammenden Hochaltar nach Entwurf des Wieners Friedrich von Schmidt. Zusammen mit dem Turm – dem 87 m hohen „Braunauer Steffl“, einem der höchsten Türme Österreichs – ist dieser „Innviertler Dom“ das größte Sakralbauwerk der Region.
