Overview

EHL awarded sites are, among other things, responsible for promoting European Values and communicating European history to the wider public and young people in particular. There is the idea of producing a board game dedicated to the label: “European Heritage Memo” (“EHM”). Using images representing EHL Sites, EHM will work just like any other “Memory” game. Furthermore, there will be some optional modifications to the game: additional questions about EHL Sites and an EHM app for scanning the card images to directly connect to the website of each EHL Sites.

EHL awarded sites are, among other things, responsible for promoting European Values and communicating European history to the wider public and young people in particular. The responsible body for the Imperial Palace Vienna has had the idea of producing a board game dedicated to the label: “European Heritage Memo” (“EHM”). Using images representing EHL Sites, EHM will work just like any other “Memory” game. As a consequence, the game does not only make its players train their minds, but also makes them learn more about the sites.
Furthermore, there will be some optional modifications to the game: Whenever a player discovers a matching pair, the game master might ask them a question about the EHL Site. These questions will be based on background information provided in the booklet. Also, the game is to be complemented by a mobile app for mobile devices. Featuring an image scanning application it connects each card with the website of the corresponding EHL Site. The players may download and use the app to retrieve additional information about EHL Sites.
EHM is to be realised by the EHL community. The coordination process is still ongoing. We are also compiling a business plan in order to ensure sustainability of the concept. EHM is intended for commercial use, whereby earnings should be used to fund further editions. While the EHL community will cover any costs related to the production of the physical version of EHM, the mobile app is an add-on and needs additional funding.

European Dimension

All EHL Sites are charged with protecting European treasures; sometimes these gems are hidden. The Sites representing diverse European Values (humanistic thinking, rationality, secularity, rule of law, democracy and human rights) should promote their values, their contribution to the European history and the label, and target the youth in particular. The EU Commission states that EHL Sites are unique because:
 “European Heritage sites bring to life the European narrative and the history behind it. They are about much more than just aesthetics
 The focus is on the promotion of the European dimension of the sites and providing access to them. This includes organising a wide range of educational activities, especially for young people
 European Heritage sites can be enjoyed singly or as part of a network. Visitors can get a real feel for the breadth and scale of what Europe has to offer and what it has achieved”
Endorsing this view and fully assuming this responsibility, we (EHL Sites) are jointly developing ideas and projects. EHM is meant to increase the level of awareness for EHL Sites and creates an understanding of our shared history.
Moreover, EHM will have an impact on education (in schools), on cross-border usage (the images displayed are of relevance for all EU countries; also, the instructions will be available in all languages of participating sites) and on diversity (used to support integration of persons with migration background, used intergenerational). All 38 EHL sites will dedicate resources to implementing EHM in a sustainable way.
