For the full twenty days in October, Cyprus will celebrate the 2016 European Heritage Days in order to bring citizens closer to their cultural heritage. Between 3rd and 23rd October, the land of mythical gods, historic monuments and breathtaking landscapes will participate in the largest European cultural event with the theme: "Heritage and Society: People - Places - Stories".

The theme focuses mainly on the intangible cultural heritage of Cyprus through these three interrelated categories. The term “People” refers to local personalities as well as occupations, customs, practices, costumes etc. The term "Places" includes monuments, historical centers and cultural and natural landscapes, while the term "Stories" refers to narratives, traditions, tales, fictions, beliefs etc.

Heritage Communities of different levels (municipalities, local councils, development agencies, societies etc), from around the island, participate with a broad range of events such as: guided tours, workshops, screenings, exhibitions, seminars, performances, lectures, video projections, theater, events for children etc.

The particular topics to be presented include architecture, traditional crafts, such as embroidery, basket weaving, pottery, grape, wheat and fig cultivations and wine and food processing, etc.

The time period spreads from the medieval to traditional with a strong link to the contemporary creative industry. In particular, music and art are used as the bridges between the past and the future, demonstrating the continuation of tradition.

More information about European Heritage Days in Cyprus available on the official website of the Cyprus Ministry of Interior and the EHD Cyprus Facebook page, while the events will be listed on our portal in September.
