Overview

19 September 2021 (11:00-17:00) DigiResources Orkney Bere is an ancient form
of barley, with a unique appearance and taste, grown and milled in Orkney for
over 300 years. 100% natural, it is perfect for baking bannocks, scones and
biscuits. The flour produced is called beremeal. The present Mill was built in
1873 and has changed little since. Remains of older mills are adjacent
awaiting restoration. Like most northern mills of this period, a kiln for
drying the grain is integral with the building. For Doors Open Days you can
enjoy free tours of Orkney's last water mill and home of Orkney Beremeal since
1893. Shop selling beremeal, oatmeal, Barony Mill, Argos, Rendalls and Westray
Bakehouse biscuits and other related products. Humes Quality Artisan Foods
Orkney will be available in the Barony Mill shop to pair with beremeal
oatcakes and biscuits for a true taste of Orkney Digital Resources Barony Mill
Orkney's only working meal mill in Birsay grinds the ancient grain of bere, a
six-rowed barley confirmed by archaeologists to have been grown in the islands
since Neolithic times. In this film made by Jack Norquoy for the Barony Mill,
guide Ellen Hay explains the machinery in action, while Margaret Phillips
shows how to make a bere bannock. Go on a virtual guided tour! Facilities
