Overview

11 September 2021 DigiResources Inverclyde Since the opening in 2014,
Belville Community Garden have developed a status within the community as a
central food growing hub, organising and coordinating community groups and
schools in growing projects. We also coordinate local schools John Muir
Awards, community arts projects and health related projects such as the green
gyms. The garden employs 1 full-time manager, 7 part-time staff and a range of
local employment scheme placements. The garden’s sit on a brown filed site in
Greenock which use to house 7 high rise tenement flats which were originally
built in the 1960’s and were demolished from 2013 to 2015. Belville Community
Garden grows a wide range of fruits and vegetables for use in our cookery
classes, commercial preserves and community distribution. Our large beds are
used for vegetable growing and are named after the high flats which once stood
on the site, taking in the breathtaking views of the Clyde and serving as a
tribute to the community of old. Potatoes, onions, brussel sprouts, leeks and
fruit bushes are harvested regularly to help ameliorate the issue of food
miles within Inverclyde. A series of honeycomb shaped raised beds contain a
variety of herbs, flowers and fruit trees, alive with the sounds of buzzing
bees and fluttering wings. Apple and plum trees sit amidst sweet pea, borage
and nasturtiums while the aromas of mint, fennel, oregano and rosemary delight
the garden visitors. The raised beds have been constructed with the help of
volunteers from all over Inverclyde and the garden is still under expansion
with new elements continually developing. Join us in the garden where we will
be serving homemade soups, tea and coffee (with limited outdoor seating). Take
a seat round the fire for some campfire cooking, go look for mini-beasts in
the garden, take part in some active conservation, or, go on a foraging walk
through the site. Foraging walks and conservation activities must be booked –
