## Excavations at the King’s Seat, Dunkeld: a Pictish Royal centre – ONLINE
EVENT
The results of recent excavations at King’s Seat, Dunkeld, an important,
though neglected small hill fort which controls the River Tay where the
highlands and lowlands meet. The fort, which has three very different
elements, was lost under thick vegetation for over 50 years and so had seen
very little study. Three years of excavations, delivered as a programme of
community archaeology from 2017-19, has confirmed the site as a well-
connected, early medieval royal power centre, where the Pictish elite met to
feast and where skilled craftspersons made high-status goods.
Delivered by Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust with Dunkeld and Birnam
Historical Society and AOC Archaeology, the project was supported by the
Heritage Fund, The Gannochy Trust and SSE.
Presented by Culture Perth and Kinross and the University of Highland and
Island’s Institute for Northern Studies.
