25 September 2021 (Tour at 12pm, Tour at 2pm (1 hour)) Shetland Sited at the
top of the Knab, there are 42 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-18 war at
Lerwick New Cemetery. There are a further 74 of the 1939-45 war, including 2
unidentified sailors of the Royal Navy and 1 unidentified seaman of the
Merchant Navy. There are also 3 Norwegian war burials here. For Doors Open
Days 2021 historian and educator Jon Sandison is running two free tours in
association with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. During the tour you
will learn about the history of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and
about the heroic actions and self-sacrifice of some of our casualties buried
in the cemetery. MEETING POINT: Please meet for the tour at the Cross of
Sacrifice, just inside the top gate at Knab Road. There is parking nearby.
There are hilly and steep slopes. Outdoor clothes and decent footwear
advisable. Please come dressed for the weather and in a suitable walking shoe.
The numbers on the tour will be limited to abide by Government restrictions
and social distancing rules must be followed. Tickets for the tours on
Saturday (12pm and 2pm, lasting 1 hour) can be booked here. Facilities WC
