Overview

19 September 2021 (12pm; 90 mins) Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival Join us on
the debut of our inclusive heritage women’s walk in central Glasgow. Walk with
us as we uncover the stories of the incredible women and their communities who
have shaped this city. This trail has been coproduced with the volunteers of
the Thistles and Dandelions project, a community heritage group which centres
Black, Asian, migrant, refugee and asylum seeking women. Throughout the last
year we have come together to learn about women’s history with help from
partners like the Glasgow Women’s Library and Women’s History Scotland. From
our research we have created a guided tour celebrating the multi-layered
narratives of so much of the city: one of the stops being both the supposed
site of the chapel of St Thenue, the mother of Glasgow, and now the offices of
charity Empower Women for Change; another stop, the Central Mosque, telling
both the story of the Muslim women who fundraised to build it and now the
vaccination drive during the pandemic. This trail also tells the journey of
our project, with the stories of the artists, writers, and historians who
helped shape it, inspiring us to celebrate some of our own personal stories as
part of the fabric of Glasgow. Thistles and Dandelions is a project of Empower
Women for Change, a Glasgow-based charity dedicated to advancing the
leadership and active citizenship of ethnic minority women. The project is
funded by Heritage Lottery Fund. Meeting point: Outside Empower Women for
Change. Facilities Limited Access
