2018 is a momentous year for Latvia. Established as an independent country exactly one hundred years ago, Latvia celebrates a century of modern history and horizon of new opportunities for progress.

Gaining independence on 18th November 1918, the Republic of Latvia started moving towards contemporary democracy, while preserving its unique traditions and values. A century later, it represents one of the fastest-growing EU economies and an attractive destination for life and tourism.

As Europe celebrates a centenary year of the end of the World War I, Latvia too takes a look back at its foundations. Throughout 2018, the country will celebrate its history with a number of activities dedicated to the themes of freedom, independence, and democracy.

The spirit of these celebrations will also dominate this year’s European Heritage Days. The festival will traditionally take place during the third weekend in September and will include country-wide events honouring history, traditions, and shared European values. The visitors will have an opportunity to experience the last hundred years of Latvia’s history in a new way and rediscover their heritage.

As announced on the website of the State Inspection for Heritage protection of the Republic of Latvia, several key themes will be particularly highlighted. These include the concept of state, which will be explored through events and places that shaped the history of Latvia, the spirit of independence and freedom, restoration and recovery of the country, as well as Latvia’s dreams and hopes for the future development.

Evoking senses of history, tradition, belonging, and development, these inspiring themes will offer a new perspective on Latvia’s heritage. They will also help highlight the unique values that Latvians have cherished for centuries, as well as their common roots with other European nations. With the events being a part of geater celebrations of European victories and values within European Year of Cultural Heritage, the 2018 edition of European Heritage Days in Latvia will truly be a special one.

European Heritage Days in Latvia will take place between 14 and 16 September.
