Aiming to help create a positive outlook for Europe’s treasured cultural heritage, the Strategy 21 - European Cultural Heritage Strategy for the 21st century will be officially launched on 6th and 7th April at a two-day conference in Limassol, Cyprus. On this occasion, a group of experts representing the Council of Europe, European Commission, Europa Nostra and various other organisations will meet to discuss the strategy’s social, economic and educational components, as well as the steps to its implementation.

Adopted in February 2017, Strategy 21 offers guidelines and recommendations for promoting innovative approaches to heritage management and preservation, as well as for improving the environment and the quality of life of European citizens. Its official launch in Cyprus will bring together culture and heritage experts from all across Europe to discuss representative use cases and provide advice for supporting the cultural heritage initiatives on local, national and pan-European levels.

Organised in the framework of Cypriot Chairmanship of the Council of Europe and in co-operation with the Ministry of Interior of Cyprus, the conference will take place at the architecturally unique Evagoras Lanitis Centre. As a part of a Carob Mill, one of the largest industrial buildings in Cyprus, this setting is a positive example of preserving a heritage site by repurposing it to fit the demands of modern society. The conference attendees will thus have an opportunity to learn more about the history and heritage of Cyprus, while exchanging knowledge and ideas to help protect Europe’s cultural assets.

Through a number of speaking sessions and field trips showcasing the examples of strategy implementation, the launch event will promote cultural heritage best practices and strategies that can empower citizens to take a more active participation in heritage identification and management. This way, it will also support a wider adoption of the recommended initiatives across Europe and to help secure prosperity for the field of cultural heritage in Europe.
