A strange-shaped rock, a local park bustling with walkers or simply a tree blossoming in spring - the poetics of nature can be found in simple things. To encourage the youngest to look for an inspiration in their environment and discover its richness, the theme of Finland’s Heritage Makers competition 2017 will focus on the beauties of nature.

The new edition of this traditional heritage education initiative will thus encourage more children and young people to take part in European Heritage Days, which will be celebrated with the theme “Explore Nature Together." Like in previous years, the competition will motivate the young to explore the heritage around them together with their classmates or closest friends.

The projects can be done in schools, by hobby groups or at home, and those that best capture the richness of nature will be awarded with a 500 euros prize. Texts, photos, paintings and other forms of creative expression can all be submitted for a chance to win and contribute to the promotion of Europe’s splendid natural heritage.

The Goals of the Heritage Makers Initiative

Established in 2013, the Heritage Makers competition is an annual heritage education initiative that was launched in Finland and that quickly crossed the national borders. Today, one of the favourite youth-focused European Heritage Days activities, Heritage Makers are looking to achieve the following goals:

  • Support the formation of young people’s cultural identity
  • Promote the knowledge, appreciation and evaluation of the local cultural and natural environment
  • Encourage the participation of children and young people in heritage protection activities
  • Supporte early education on shared European values, democracy and cultural heritage

How to Apply

The competition is open to students and pupils born in 1999 and after. Everyone who wishes to learn more about their heritage or showcase their creativity and exploratory skills is invited to apply here.

The award winners will be announced in early 2018, which is also the time when the task for next year will be announced. For more information on taking part in the initiative, visit http://www.kulttuuriymparistomme.fi or contact the local organisers.
