At the heart of the ancient Forest of Dean in West Gloucestershire, there lies one of the oldest forests in England, UK. The Secret Forest, a spectacular 180 billion years old woodland area, is a magical natural site steeped in heritage and rich in biodiversity. With a replica of an Iron Age village in between its dense vegetation, the Secret Forests is a journey to an ancient past and an extraordinary exploratory experience that will be available to this year’s Heritage Open Days visitors.

With the theme “History is stories. All our stories,” this year’s edition of England’s largest heritage festivals will explore the hidden histories of people and of places. While a large portion of the programme will focus on the history of LGBT&Q culture, many events will be dedicated to exploring nature and the magnificent natural heritage of the country.

In addition to the walks in the Secret Forest, where visitors will be able to explore rare plants, ancient lifestyle and enjoy wonderful English landscapes, a number of other outdoor activities will be organised to highlight the values of nature.

A guided tour through Kett’s Heights will introduce visitors to the rich history of this idyllic green oasis of Norwich, while a walk around Christchurch conservation area in Berkshire, Bedford Cemetery Open Day, will be an opportunity to find out more about the local history from the late 19th and early 20th century.

This year’s festival will also be an opportunity to experience medieval rural lifestyle through a visit to 14th century Winterbourne Medieval Barn or learn about the environmental initiatives by joining the volunteers who are restoring Buckingham Canal for a historic tour.
