Overview

The exhibition tells the story of Orangeism in the Southern Ireland since partition. In 1921, Ireland was partitioned. Suddenly all those in the Orange Institution found themselves outside of the United Kingdom, now living in the new Irish Free State. Many of these had signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 opposing Home Rule, fought during the Great War for King and Country. They wanted to remain as part of the United Kingdom. The newly formed border divided families, farms and communities all to satisfy the desire of some for “Irish freedom”. For those now residing outside the United Kingdom, they faced an uncertain future. They felt betrayed by their fellow Brethren and by fellow Unionists.
A Resolute People, the story of Southern Orangeism, sheds light on the experience of this minority in the new Irish Free State. There have been good times and bad, but like the Orange family worldwide, the Brethren of the Southern counties have tried to be model citizens, expecting no more than equity and recognition in return.
