Overview

Historic Houses of Ireland is delighted that over 50 of its members are opening their doors to celebrate Heritage Week this year. All of our members are protected family homes, spanning the spectrum from large castles to modest country houses. Heritage Week 2023’s theme of Living Heritage is particularly relevant to us. Many of our houses have been in the same hands for generations and so their landscapes and woodlands have been preserved almost intact over the centuries: Castlegarde in Co. Limerick is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Ireland, while Ballykilcavan House in Co. Laois has been home to Walsh-Kemmis family since 1639. Other member houses were more recently acquired by passionate new owners who have dedicated themselves to restoring both their homes and regenerating the lands they stand on. Killua Castle in Co. Westmeath, Ballysallagh House in Co. Kilkenny, Loughton House in Co. Offaly and Rokeby Hall, for example, in Co. Louth have all been meticulously restored by their current owners over many years.
Our members are passionate about their homes and see themselves as proud custodians of Irish history and heritage. They love sharing the story of their homes with visitors! The 50-plus HHI Houses celebrating Heritage Week 2023 include Slane Castle Co. Meath, Lisnavagh Co. Carlow, Killruddery Co. Wicklow, Gloster House Co. Offaly, Corravahan in Co. Cavan, Blarney House Co. Cork, Castle Leslie Co. Monaghan, the Malthouse Co. Laois, Dromana in Co. Waterford, and Coopershill Co. Sligo.
