Embodied in local myths and legends, as well as in nature-inspired traditions and rituals, the history of community experiences with nature is as old as that of our civilisation. This tight bond between people and their local environment will be in focus for this year’s European Heritage Days, which will highlight the diversity of ways in which one can get closer to nature and enjoy its beauties.

With the theme “Heritage and Nature: A Landscape of Possibilities,” this year’s programme is looking to encourage people to explore their local environments and recognise the values of natural heritage around them. The theme also provides space for event organisers to go beyond traditional heritage exploration activities and engage their local communities through outdoor events, nature-inspired competitions or educational workshops focused on exploring biodiversity, wildlife or ecology.

For those looking to create memorable new experiences with the nature in their region, we have published a paper titled 101 Event Ideas for 2017 Heritage and Nature Theme. The ideas presented in the paper are designed to offer inspiration for event organisers and help them find the best way to highlight the values of their local environments.

From a sensory exhibition of smells from nature and photography workshops to storytelling sessions or guided hiking tours – there are a number of ways in which you can capture the unique energy coming from nature. You can celebrate the magic of water, traditions and rituals related to nature, food or wine-making, as well as local businesses that utilize natural resources to develop a sustainable business. All these themes and many other ideas are covered in our guide to help you make this year's European Heritage Days in your town or region truly special.

Designed to help you engage your local community in unique exploratory activities, this guide offers you practical tips for over a hundred events you can organise this autumn. Get inspired for a magical season in nature and invite your local community to discover the beauties of local parks, gardens, yards, national reserves and other green spots.
