Next week, Berlin will open one of the most important events of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

Lasting from 18 to 24 June, the European Heritage Summit will be held under the slogan Sharing Heritage - Sharing Values and will include 50 events that promise to promote the European Cultural Heritage Agenda among the many private and public stakeholders.

Among the numerous inspiring events taking place in Germany and beyond, the main events will be held on 21 and 22 June in Berlin and Potsdam.

Heritage Excellence Fair

Highlighted as one of the key events of the summit, the Heritage Excellence Fair will take place on 21 June at the Allianz Forum in Berlin. Co-hosted by Europa Nostra and the European Commission with support of the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, the two-part event will be dedicated to the work of the 2018 EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards winners. The 30 laureates will be given a deserving chance to present their heritage achievements as being an integral part of a European heritage aspect.

Open Heritage Evening

Berlin’s Museum Island, one of the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Berlin will host the Open Heritage Evening event on 21 June. The organisers (DNK, Europa Nostra, SPK) have planned an inspiring celebratory programme. Together with the free access to the Pergamon Museum, the Neues Museum, and the Alte Nationalgalerie between 17:00 and 20:00, participants will be able to enjoy a festive reception in the Colonnade Courtyard. The reception will be accompanied by the music performances of Love Tree Sharing Heritage Ensemble and of the European Union Youth Orchestra in the Neues Museum.

European Policy Debate “Sharing Heritage – Sharing Values”

European political decision makers and cultural heritage stakeholders will come together on 22 June at the Allianz Forum and Berlin Congress Center to discuss the importance of cultural heritage for the future of Europe. The event will present the Berlin Call – an initiative to support the implementation of the European Agenda and Action Plan for Cultural Heritage. The event is organized by DNK, Europa Nostra and SPK.

European Heritage Awards Ceremony

To top the main events section, the European Heritage Awards Ceremony will be held on 22 June at the Berlin Congress Centre. The ceremony will be traditionally hosted by Maestro Plácido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra, and Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport. They will be honoured by the presence of the Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who acts as Patron of the European Year of Cultural Heritage in the country. As announced in May, 30 winners from 17 countries will be awarded for their exceptional efforts in four heritage categories. Additionally, the seven Grand Prix laureates and the Public Choice Award winner will be announced during the Ceremony.

Together with the exciting European Picnic at Sanssouci (23 June), the Interactive Fair titled Our Heritage (24 June), and various other initiatives presented on the European Heritage Summit will help establish the event as one of the most important legacies of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
