Lithuanian Cultural Sites to Open Their Doors for “Heritage and Entertainment”
Lithuania's arts and entertainment heritage will be given centre stage at the 2019 European Heritage Days celebrations in Lithuania this autumn.
Traditionally, heritage events in Lithuania provide numerous opportunities for heritage promotion and preservation. Participatory events organised yearly allow thousands of visitors to see, hear, feel, touch, taste and smell the centuries-old heritage and give it a form of a living cultural element.
As announced on 1 March at the seminar at the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture, European Heritage Days 2019 celebrations in Lithuania are honouring “Heritage and Entertainment”.
Representatives of the Department, cities and district municipalities, museums and local organizers were all united in a goal to provide a successful edition of heritage sharing and exploration through joint effort and cooperation. Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage, Vidmantas Bezaras shared his vision for cultural sharing in 2019. He emphasized the importance of heritage promotion as well as the collaboration and communication between the teams dedicated to heritage events organization. From 20 to 22 September, hundreds of heritage sites will be given a new life as the entertainment heritage takes centre stage.
The 2018 Centenary Heritage Celebration Highlights
This year's European Heritage Days preparations follow an exciting year of 2018 EHDs events in Lithuania.
Last year, more than 5000 visitors were given opportunity to "Discover the Heritage of the Century" at over 300 heritage sites in 48 Lithuanian municipalities.
Coinciding with the celebration of a centenary of its statehood restoration, Lithuania marked the 2018 European Heritage Days by exploring the facets of tangible and intangible heritage which shaped its cultural identity throughout the century.
The heritage events in the country’s capital, Vilnius, put focus on the cultural, demographic and architectural aspects of the twentieth century Lithuanian heritage. Thematic exploratory walks provided insight into the life and the people throughout the century-old history.
Other Lithuanian cities including Kaunas, Šiauliai, Garliava, Panevėžys, Žagarė, and Plungė organised numerous heritage events dedicated to celebrating the uniting power of diverse cultural and national contribution which created the cultural identity of Lithuania today. Orienteering games, cycling tours, bus trips and special guided tours and initiatives all bridged the past and the future through shared values.

Once again, heritage will provide a basis for cross-cultural and cross-national dialogue in Lithuania at the 2019 European Heritage Days events. Various heritage sites will be transformed into stages for exploration of the development of traditional entertainment forms which created the vibrant cultural scene of Lithuania.
