European Heritage Days in Sweden are one of the country’s most vivid cultural events with over 17000 people who visited it last year. In 2015, the official theme of “Kulturarvsdagen” or Cultural Heritage Days, as the event is called in the country, celebrated technology and industry to align with the European Heritage Days common theme.

In 2016, the focus will move to the role of communicates and the official theme will be “Movements at all Times,” as announced on the official portal of Swedish National Heritage Board, the coordinator of European Heritage Days in Sweden. The events will take place Friday to Sunday 9th – 11th September and will highlight the importance of communities, organizations and individuals in enabling the development of cultural heritage and environments.

The theme of movements will bring into spotlight the creation of history and culture in 24 out of 25 Swedish provinces that participate in the event. All the way from Skane, Halland and Blekinge to Lappland and Norrboten, visitors will have an opportunity to explore cultural and historical sites, as well as monuments and landmarks for free. First celebrated in 1988 under the name “Open House,” European Heritage Days in Sweden regularly gather thousands of culture explorers to various workshops, guided tours, themed exhibitions and other exploratory events. This year too, Swedish museums, galleries and other cultural institutions will open their doors some of the most exciting cultural events, whose list will be announced here. 

Like in previous years, the main organiser of the events will be Swedish National Heritage Board which operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture in Sweden. With an aim to preserve sites of cultural and historical value in the country, the organisation invites all the interested individuals, schools and organisations to submit their ideas for the events that relate to the theme and participate in this year’s European Heritage Days.
