Young European Heritage Makers Explore Strasbourg's Cultural and Democratic Landmarks
A group of young heritage enthusiasts recently visited some of the most iconic institutions in Strasbourg as part of their prize for winning the European-level Young European Heritage Makers competition. This prestigious contest, aimed at encouraging children to explore and celebrate Europe’s rich cultural heritage, saw five groups of children emerge as winners. Their reward? An unforgettable trip to the heart of European democracy and culture on September 27-28.
The young winners were warmly welcomed to the Council of Europe by Matjaž Gruden, Director for Democracy, who congratulated them on their impressive achievements in the competition. He emphasized the importance of their role as young ambassadors of cultural heritage, highlighting how their contributions are vital to promoting and preserving Europe’s diverse history and values.
The visit continued with a tour of the Council of Europe, where the children learned about the institution's role in protecting human rights and promoting democracy across the continent. They then visited the European Parliament, where they gained insight into the workings of one of Europe’s most important decision-making bodies, giving them a glimpse into the democratic processes that shape the European Union.

The visit also included a stop at Strasbourg’s iconic Cathedral, where the children marveled at its gothic architecture and historical significance. They further delved into local culture at the Alsatian Museum, which provided insight into the unique traditions and heritage of the Alsace region.
The trip was not just about visiting landmarks, however. The children also engaged in hands-on workshops at the European Youth Center. Here, they participated in discussions and creative activities that highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage and fostering European identity.
This remarkable visit, held from September 27-28, allowed these young heritage makers not only to learn about European institutions and history but also to celebrate their achievements in a meaningful way, fostering a deeper connection to their shared European heritage.
The Young European Heritage Makers are a shining example of how children can inspire us to appreciate and celebrate our cultural heritage. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication to preserving Europe’s diverse traditions are truly commendable. We look forward to seeing how these young ambassadors will continue to play a vital role in keeping our shared heritage vibrant for future generations.
