The Giant of Kangari I live in Ropaži. In the area, stands the Ķoderi Hillfort, an ancient Latvian settlement. Close to the hillfort, lie the Kangari Hills with an ancient pass (once inhabited by thieves who robbed travellers), a marsh and Lake Kangari. There are various legends and tales surrounding the place. My favourite is the tale about the giant of Kangari and the Ķoderi Hillfort as it seems the most realistic to me. I chose to develop my story by impersonating the giant of Kangari. I familiarised myself with the local legends about the giant and then made a cardboard mask. After that I visited the sites mentioned in the legends, the Ķoderi Hillfort and Kangari Marsh where a viewing tower and marsh footpath have been built. I took pictures of myself at these locations. While visiting these beautiful places I noticed in their close proximity a number of gravel- and dolomite-pits that result in digging off the hills and degrading the landscape. In my opinion, it is sad, because by allowing such activity we lose not only natural resources, but also a part of our European historical heritage – the legend about a giant who built a causeway through the marsh to be able to travel from his home at Ķoderi Hillfort to Riga to buy salt. I enjoyed impersonating the life of the giant, because the legend is part of not only Latvian culture, but also that of the whole Europe, and that is why I wish to share this story. I want everyone to know that our land is rich with such beautiful ancient places and stories, which must be preserved for posterity. Kangaru milzis Es dzīvoju Ropažos. Netālu atrodas senlatviešu apdzīvota vieta- Ķoderu pilskalns. Tam blakus ir Kangaru kalni, kam pāri iet sens ceļš (tur kādreiz dzīvoja laupītāji, kas aplaupīja ceļiniekus), purvs un Kangaru ezeriņš. Par šo vietu ir saglabājušies dažādi nostāsti- pasakas un teikas. Man visvairāk patīk teika par Kangaru milzi un Ķoderu pilskalnu, tā varētu būt vistuvāk patiesībai. Savu stāstu es nolēmu veidot iejūtoties Kangaru milža ādā. Es iepazinos ar mūsu novada teikām par lielo milzi, tad izgatavoju masku no kartona, pēc tam devos uz vietām, kas bija pieminētas teikās- Ķoderu pilskalnu un Kangaru purvu, kur tagad ir uztaisīts skatu tornis un purva taciņa. Šajās vietās es fotografējos milža tēlā. Apmeklējot šīs skaistās vietas, es pamanīju, ka tām blakus ir daudz grants un dolomīta karjeri- tiek norakti kalni un izbojāta ainava. Manuprāt, tas ir ļoti skumji, jo tā mēs zaudējam ne tikai dabas resursus, bet arī daļu no mūsu Eiropas vēsturiskā mantojuma- teiku par milzi, kurš no savām mājām Ķoderu pilskalnā uzbēra ceļu cauri purvam, lai varētu sausām kājām tikt uz Rīgu pēc sāls. Man bija interesanti izjust milža dzīvi, tā ir daļa ne tikai no Latvijas, bet arī no visas Eiropas kultūras, tieši tāpēc es vēlos ar šo stāstu dalīties. Gribu, lai cilvēki zin, ka mums ir tik skaistas senas vietas un stāsti, ko nedrīkst pazaudēt.
