Overview
Bubanj settlement existed from 5800. - 5200. BC. It was situated on the hill between two rivers, the Nisava and the Juzna Morava. It was an important crossroad for all the four sides of the world. Roads from Bulgaria and Asia crossed here to the Adriatic sea and from Greece to Europe. This place is still the crossroad as it was centuries ago. The valleys of the rivers were an ideal place for hunting, travelling and cultivating the first grains. They were breeding sheep, hogs and goats. The key item found there was made of the hog’s jaw, which is believed to be the religious and ceremonial symbol. Tools made of stone and bones, knives made of flint and items made of copper (younger period) were found in this settlement. The pottery found there is of an excellent quality. The conclusion of the scientists is that people lived peacefully in that period since no weapons were found. Building the new modern communications ( the railway Belgrade - Bar and the highway Nis-Skoplje) contributed to the deterioration and destroying of the site Bubanj. At this moment only 3% of the whole settlement is preserved. The erosion of the ground, rain and storms are destroying the rest of the site and it is believed that it will disappear in 20 years if nothing is done in order to preserve it. First time I went to this site was with my history teacher and friends from the class. I liked it because of the fact that people from that period did not use any weapons. It was fascinating for me since they were at the early stage of development. Today teachers all around the world pay attention on including students in a lot of non-violent activities, but who thought those people in Neolithic age? Nobody! They acted naturally. I felt very sad when our teacher told us about its disappearing but I believe that it can be preserved if the story is passed on. Iva Kostić OŠ “Desanka Maksimović” - Čokot
