Evanger verksmiðjan á Siglufirði – The Evanger herring factory in Siglufjörður
Overview
Sixth graders Sandra, Þórný and Karen made a video about the Evanger herring factory, located just outside their hometown. The factory was built by Norwegians in 1911 in the fjord of Siglufjörður and marked the beginning of modernisation in the area. It was the first industrial site of its kind in Iceland and was made possible by links to Norway. Only a few years later in 1919 the factory and surrounding buildings, including homes of workers, was hit by an avalanche killing 90 people. The site was never rebuild and is dominated by massive ruins to this day.
