At the time, the First World War was the greatest war in the history of mankind. Memories of this war for civilization are contained in many testimonies, one of them being cultural monuments –dedicated to war heroes and places of suffering, as a specific and particularly valuable segment of the permanent European cultural heritage. The unparalleled warrior stories –stone books of the ancestors stand on the fields of Serbia.Scatteredbesides roads, crossways, and meadows, they defy andproudly remind of the individuals who sacrificed their lives for the freedom we live in today. Memorials‘KRAJPUTAŠI’ are dedicated to the Serbian soldiers fallen in distant countries in the First World Warwhose graves are unknown. A hundred years ago, Serbian soldiers startedoff to the First World War right from those fields, crossways and roads. Only few returned from the battle....from the battlefieldsof Greece, France, England ... from the captivity in Czech Republic, Austria, and Bulgaria... After the war, areport of heroic deathoften replaced soldier’s homecoming. It was often unknown where a soldier died or where he was buried. Mothers, fathers, relatives, brothers and sisters have erected a memorial, ‘KRAJPUTAŠ’, and resemblingan imprinted epitaph, they made that each, identically carved soldier, steps forward and becomes distinguishable. They trulydepictnot only a destiny of a soldier, but also his family and the craftsmanship of an artist – the stonemason. „Dear reader, hold on a while. In the war I lost my life.
