Overview

This talk and presentation will outline the history of the village of
Scotstown, Co. Monaghan for a century from 1860-1960 using the Valuation Revision books held in the Valuation Office archives, Dublin. These books make it possible to trace ownership and occupation of property in the village from the time of the Griffith’s, or Primary Valuation, published in 1860 up to the 1960s.

A modified version of the Ordnance Survey map accompanies these lists, with each individual property marked with a number corresponding to the numbered list. The Valuation Revision books were collated at regular intervals after the initial Primary Valuation, usually every fifteen years or so. They record any changes to the properties since the previous valuation, such as a change in occupants/ownership or the modification of the buildings. This will allow researchers and the local community to connect with the people and the buildings of the village, tracing names that may be familiar today as well as those long forgotten.

The talk will highlight any interesting stories and connections that arise during the research and will also trace the change in use of buildings over time. Attendees will be invited and encouraged to add their own local knowledge to compliment and add to the records. Tea/coffee/biscuits will be provided after the talk, providing an opportunity for attendees to mingle and chat about the history of the village.
