Overview

Portranes Martello tower Built in 1806, One of 26 built in line of sight of the next. Inspired by a tower in Corsica which withstood siege by British forces. The decision was made that towers of such Strength, the walls being 8ft to 9ft thick should be built along the coast of Britain and Ireland to defend maritime invasion by Napoleon. Now owned by Terry Prone, Portranes Martello Tower holds over 200 years of history encased in its ground. Explore this hidden gem and hear its story told by Terry her self and Bryan Greene. BOOKING IS REQUIRED. Tours take place no mater the weather so bring a raincoat. Suitable footwear 4 scaling spiral staircases is advised. Parking is limited but the view point of tower bay has ample! The fee to visit is as follows: Adults €6 Kids are free! Seniors /students are 3€ Tours last about 40 -50minutes and run hourly! Entry to the tower is by the gate on the main road. You must press the bell to enter.
