Overview

Small picturesque village in the heights of the Pays de Serres, Saint-Médard has among its charming medieval buildings in white limestone hillsides a church with a history to say the least eventful. Its construction dates from the 12th century, with a partial reconstruction at the end of the 15th century, then a restoration during the 17th century. The early church is a Romanesque building with an elongated plan. The nave ends with a bedside table consisting of a straight bay and a vaulted apse. The bedside has buttresses on the outside and decorated with modillons, stone blocks placed under the cornices to support them. The Romanesque choir dates from the construction of the building at the beginning of the 12th century, and the nave has a later Gothic architectural style. The church of Saint-Médard suffered the ravages of the Hundred Years' War, the nave had to be partially rebuilt towards the end of the 15th century.
