Abbey of Melleray
A place of silence and prayer founded in 1183, bordered by a 6-hectare pond. In 2015, the Cistercian monks handed over the reins to the Chemin Neuf community, which lives and prays here. Twelfth-century church with tombstones and acoustic vases, 18th-century building with grand staircase and listed rooms, 19th-century cloister. Open-air concert, exhibition of local painters, candle-making workshop for children, Vespers service (in the evening), shop and abbey products. Self-guided tour (free) and guided tour with presentation of the history of the abbey (fee payable) every 1/2 hour from 2pm, tour of the abbey vegetable garden, exhibition of historical photos of the abbey, film screening, exhibition of paintings by local artists, outdoor activities, bee-keeping workshop, candle-making workshop for children, Vespers service (in the evening), access to the shop and sales of abbey products...
