Overview

François Malfait, architect for the City of Brussels, was commissioned to build the future Athenaeum Robert Catteau. The challenge was twofold: not to obstruct the panoramic view of the city from the Palais de Justice esplanade, while at the same time occupying an area on a hillside with a steep incline. Work began in 1923 and was completed in 1927. The building replaced the former convent of the Minimes, which adjoined the eponymous church. The entrance on Rue Ernest Allard is marked by a large pavilion with an awning, flanked by two corner blocks. On the Rue des Minimes side, the monumental Art Deco-style façade with its rusticated base is impressive. Typical of the interwar period, the school complex also included a kindergarten, two playgrounds and a conference hall that could be converted into a cinema. In collaboration with E-GUIDES.
