Overview

The Palais des Beaux-Arts, or BOZAR since 2003, is a key player in the cultural life of Brussels, with a programme that includes music, visual arts, theatre, dance, literature, cinema and architecture. Although considered one of Belgium’s leading exponents of Art Nouveau, architect Victor Horta chose the geometric language of Art Deco for the design of this unique eight-storey, 8,000 m² building, which, as he confided in his memoirs, marked "a high point in my career". Work began in 1922 and was completed in 1929, although the complex opened in 1928. It was undoubtedly a real challenge, as the architect had to restart his plans six times; the nature of the soil, the steep slope, the limited height and the intentionally discreet facade were all constraints that made his work very complicated. There are, however, a number of constants in the master’s work, such as his desire to bring zenithal light into the exhibition halls and the way he designed the extraordinary Salle Henry Le Bœuf, which is much sought-after by orchestras from all over the world.
