Overview

Ballyanne graveyard, featuring the ruins of a Parish Church, dates back to medieval times, with tombstones still legible from the early 1700s. From the site, it is possible to look across the Barrow Valley to the solid peak of Brandon Hill to the northwest and the curving outline of the Leinster Range to the east.

We will make connections between the past and present, the living and the dead, the inert minerals of rock and the wide associated biodiversity of lichens, mosses, liverworts, algae and ferns on and near the various rock types. We will examine the variety of old stone carving styles to be seen. A well, is also visible in the small valley beside the graveyard. Water and local hydrology will be referenced for Water Heritage Day. Water is of course vital for life, for transporting dimension stones in medieval times and for shaping the landscape around us.

Join Maria Cullen, native geologist and biologist, from the Irish Geological Association, as we explore the riches of this site of diverse local heritage.
This Irish Geological Association event is free and all are welcome.
