Overview

27 September 2025 (11:00 - 18:00) 28 September 2025 (11:00 - 18:00) Barnton Bunker is a previously abandoned WWII and Cold War era nuclear bunker which was built as a military command centre and nuclear shelter for the queen, had she been at her Edinburgh residence during a nuclear attack. Damaged by fires in the 1990's, today it is being restored by our charity organization, the Barnton Bunker Preservation Society- into a haven for the Arts, Theatre and Music, History Education, and Cultural Celebrations for all of Edinburgh, and visitors from all around the world to enjoy! We will be celebrating the opening of our new community garden this weekend, and on Sunday there will be live music, business stalls, a goods swap, and food truck! Both days will feature free ticketed entry to our gardens, above ground WWll military complex, iconic circular tunnel, and visits with our goats and chickens! {Maybe even Emus, if they are feeling social!} (Access to the underground Cold War-era sections of the bunker is available on these days as well--only through a separate paid ticket available on our website. These underground tours are not part of our free-access areas and garden celebrations above ground. Our paid tours and events help to support our ongoing restoration work and arts-future endeavours.) Time slots for Doors Open entry must be booked in advance through our website, and are available now. WWII and the Cold War era saw the creation of similar structures across the globe, as the threat of nuclear warfare loomed for the first time and entered our collective consciousness. But today here at Barnton Bunker, we are creating something new-- from a place of Hope. We are looking forward to all of the possibilities of what can happen here, and with each passing day and new creative project, we aim to show Edinburgh--and the world--what we as a species can build amidst the wreckage and remains of fear. Our intention is to transform this complex into a place where the arts, musical and theatrical performances, immersive experiences, cultural celebrations and unique art exhibits/events can take place; All of which will show our visitors a doorway into what can be- as long as we care for and listen to one another, our environment, and the inherent creativity of mankind that so often relies on Hope as it's main ingredient. Our restoration project and charity organization are run by volunteers from all over the world who live and work together at the bunker, and the progress we make here every day is an example of how everyone, regardless of their differences, can cooperate to achieve goals.. and in the process- form meaningful connections and friendships that last a lifetime. We are in the process of conveying these social aspects of our project through our online presence and podcast, and showing what is possible through our upcoming events, concerts, magic shows, garden initiative and nature-walk days, exhibits, immersive Halloween Haunted House, and more.. yet to be imagined! Attendees will need to find parking in the neighbourhood near our wilderness area. We will let visitors into our complex using our pedestrian gate which is found on the trail as you approach our address.
