Overview

The old church of Saint-Nicolas, dating from the 15th century, had become too cramped. From the middle of the 18th century, they thought of rebuilding. As early as 1805, the parishioners demanded the restoration of the church. We have to wait for the restoration before we really think about the reconstruction. The architect OGEE had a neo-classical church project adopted in 1825\\. But in 1836, the new parish priest of Saint-Nicolas, Félix Fournier, imposed the architect Alexandre PIEL, who chose the return to the Gothic of the thirteenth century. In 1840, PIEL abandoned the project to enter the orders. It was Jean-Baptiste LASSUS who took over the file and had a program established, which was adopted in 1841\\. The work was quite lengthy. The building was completed and opened in 1870\\. During the Second World War, the church of Saint-Nicolas was badly damaged by the bombings of 1943 which destroyed a large part of the center of Nantes.
