Bats of ireland
One of a series of weekend events organised for National Heritage week.
Presented and guided by Dr. Dara Fitzpatrick
A documentary followed by tea/coffee break and an outing (with bat detector, to identify individual species).
How to identify, study, appreciate and care for Irish bats. Prepare to be inspired to become involved in bat protection!
Because of their vulnerability to threats and decline in numbers, bats and their roosts are protected by Irish and EU law. This means it is an offence to disturb, injure or kill bats or disturb or destroy their roosts. They use a wide variety of roosts, including buildings of all sorts, trees and underground places.
At a local roost and habitat level bats remain vulnerable to threats such as water pollution, increased artificial night lighting, habitat and hedgerow loss, construction/development, pesticides etc.
Dara is a member of Birdwatch Ireland, passionate about and involved in many projects locally and nationally in an efforts to record, educate, protect and inspire appreciation for Irish wildlife.
Included in the weekend: Irish Wildlife Sounds with Séan Ronayne, the “Moth Man” documentary on life and work of Ken Bond (in attendance), exhibition, farm outings, talks/presentations, a Ceilidh, and childrens' workshops...and of course refreshments.
