This is a new venue for 2025.
Hidden beneath a dramatic coastal promontory, this remarkable underground bunker at the former RAF Inverbervie was built in the 1950s as part of the ROTOR radar defence programme and was designed to detect Soviet bombers using Type 13 and Type 14 radar systems. It was later used by the US Navy in conjunction with RAF Edzell and eventually served as a British Army emergency communications centre.
The structure spans 10,000 square feet underground, with 10ft-thick concrete walls, blast doors, and a fortified tunnel—built to withstand nuclear attack.
Now privately owned, the site is undergoing restoration and creative repurposing, with interest from artists and historians alike. Its labyrinthine interior, once a hub of surveillance and secrecy, is being transformed into a space for learning, innovation, and cultural reflection.
A powerful example of mid-20th-century defensive architecture, the site reflects Cold War geopolitics and technological urgency. Once top secret, the bunker’s heavy blast doors now open for an atmospheric journey into the past.
Guided tours led by an architectural historian will explore the site’s architecture and design.
Tour times: 10am, 12.30pm and 3pm.
