Overview
British Deaf Association Scotland is celebrating their 135 Year anniversary. Founded in 1890 in Leeds, the British Deaf Association has been a cornerstone of Deaf rights and British Sign Language (BSL) advocacy. BDA Scotland runs several impactful projects that involve Deaf people from diverse backgrounds:
1. Deaf Roots and Pride (DRP) Transitions
Supports Deaf youth (8–25) through school and life transitions. Activities include:
Workshops on Deaf identity and rights, Mentorship from Deaf role models, Youth advisory groups shaping future services.
2. BSL (Scotland) Act 2015 – 10 Years of Progress
The BSL (Scotland) Act 2015 was a landmark in recognising BSL as a language of Scotland. Over the past decade, it has led to:
The creation of National and Local BSL Plans, Employment of Deaf BSL users in public bodies, Increased visibility of BSL in government communications (e.g., COVID briefings), Ongoing efforts to improve early years education, teacher training, and access to services.
British Sign Language (BSL) is the primary language of communication at BDA Scotland. To ensure full access and participation, BSL/English interpreters will be present. This supports inclusive communication between Deaf staff, volunteers, and the wider public.
