Overview

Since the 12th century, the site occupied by the City of Brussels PCSW has housed and cared for the most disadvantaged individuals. First, there was the Saint-Pierre leprosarium, which later became a convent and finally a hospital in 1783. Today, the PCSW is housed in a complex built between 1929 and 1935 by Jean-Baptiste Dewin, an architect who was instrumental in spreading the Art Deco style in Brussels between the wars. Partially demolished in 1992, it remains an important vestige of the original building, which has since been listed. The building’s marked functionalism is discreetly blended with Art Deco elements in the ironwork and stairwells. Few would suspect that behind its facades lie real treasures, paintings, sculptures and even pieces of silverware, all testimonies to the history of the city of Brussels and piously preserved here.
