Castles, Monks and McCarthys
In the leadup to the 2024 Skellig Coast Archaeology Festival 'Farming from Prehistory onwards' (www.discoveriveragh.ie/events), Heritage Iveragh/Oidhreacht Uíbh Ráthaigh is delighted to invite you to join us on this walk with our Vice-Chair, Dr Eoin O'Neill. The walk begins at Ballinskelligs Abbey and continues to the castle by Ballinskelligs beach. Eoin discusses how these sites are connected and various aspects of life in Gaelic Ireland in the 15th and 16th centuries - the role of abbeys in the Gaelic world, the various functions of castles, and the MacCarthy Mór lordship. Emphasis will also be given to farming: the different types of agriculture in Gaelic Ireland, what animals were raised, and the varieties of crops that were grown. All welcome!
