Overview

Geographically, Saints-Pierre-et-Paul church was built between the disused Saint-Nicolas church and Saint-Pierre church, of which only the Romanesque tower remains. At the request of the Archbishop’s palace, two powerful towers were added to the facade to commemorate these two monuments to the municipality’s history. Architect Henri-Julien De Ridder designed this powerful building, which rose from the ground in 1935. Modernist in style, it features references to the past, such as the churches of the Mosan region with their two mighty bell towers on the facade. In this case, the reinforced concrete structure is clad in brick, while the interior is covered in plaster. Ample barrel vaulting punctuates the entire width of the single nave. The astonishing clerestory bas-reliefs, like the one on the tympanum of the main entrance, are the work of Paul Stoffijn. Self-guided tour of the church. Bilingual (FR/NL) guided tours of the church and district will be given continuously, starting as soon as a group is formed. Look up in the surrounding streets and you will discover characteristic facades that tell the story of the district’s birth.
