Overview

Appearing in 1019 with Foucauld, lord of La Roche, the family of La Rochefoucauld was long considered a branch of the Lusignan, because of the similarity of their weapons. It seems, in reality, that Foucauld was a close relative of the Viscount of Limoges, a descendant of a Grand de la cour de Charlemagne. Only four other families in France (including that of the Capetians) can claim such seniority. The history of the castle is inseparable from the history of the La Rochefoucauld family, which, itself, is inscribed, century after century, in the political life of its time. At the beginning of the eleventh century, the La Rochefoucauld built a stronghold on a rocky spur overlooking the Tardoire. The castle today testifies to the richness of French architecture for more than seven centuries: Romanesque keep, fortress of the fifteenth century, castle of the Renaissance in the sixteenth century then enlargements of the eighteenth century. The castle was listed as a Historical Monument in 1
