Our Lady of Sestairanègues, whose name is of Gallo-Roman origin, still listed in 1770 on the map of Cassini, is without doubt the first place of worship recorded in the history of our municipality, since it appears as early as 1061 This location on the map of Cassini corresponds in particular with the ruins of an old building on the place called Notre Dame. In the 12th century, Lord Arnaldus built the castle associated with a castral chapel dedicated to Saint Etienne, which led to the transfer of the patronage of the Virgin from the old church to the castral chapel, known today as Notre Dame du Fort. It seems, however, that the parish priest of the village did not leave Notre Dame de Sestairanègues until after 1465. This chapel therefore housed the cult events of Montarnaud for centuries.
