Les Ferrère and their sculptural heritage: a baroque epic in the heart of the central Pyrenees
The Maison des Ferrère and the Pyrenean Baroque traces the history of a dynasty of sculptors, the Ferrère. Descriptive panels with photos trace their career. From 1647 to 1808, the Ferrère family marked the world of baroque sculpture. John, his son Mark, John II and his brother Dominic are a «dynasty» of woodcarvers. Originally from Asté, in the Campan valley, they carved the altarpieces and tabernacles of many churches in the Hautes-Pyrénées. No less than 59 churches were decorated by these local artists: twisted columns, cherubs, decorative motifs, carved in wood and gilded in fine gold. The most famous are those of Asté, Beaudéan, Campan, Pouzac.
