From Refuge to ALMH: four centuries of history and evolution
Élisabeth de Ranfaing (1592-1649), nicknamed the Énergumène of Nancy after years of crises of possession and several exorcisms, founded in 1624 a charity for "the lost girls" rue Saint Nicolas in Nancy. She created the monastery "Notre-Dame du Refuge" with the support of Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine, and Nicolas-François, Bishop of Toul. In 1695, the convent, expelled by the Capuchins, moved to the Rue des 4 Églises. In 1720, the buildings of the Refuge becoming too narrow, the nuns make raise new buildings on the streets of Greve (current street Charles III) and street of the Church. During the Revolution, the institution became a prison, then a "House of Repression and Relief". In 1804, the Department of Meurthe entrusted the administration of this establishment to the nuns of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Charles de Nancy.
