Overview

At the beginning of the XIth century s., Rodolphe d' Altenbourg instal(settles) on his domain, in Ottmarsheim, an abbey intended(designed) for Benedictines. Coming from the noble family of the Hapsburg, the incomes of his lands authorise him to face up heavy spending(expenses) generated by construction. The Abbey church harmed(served) at once the community of the sisters and the parish. Masterpiece of Romance architecture, its octagonal centered plan imitates the palatine chapel of Aachen. By his(her, its) financial and geographical status, his(her, its) history(story) is the most notable: two fires in the XIIIth and XVth century s., war of 30 years, French Revolution and both world wars in the course of which became impaired his(her, its) primitive(initial) architecture. The abbey church was listed(classified) on the list promoted by Mérimée in 1841\\. In 1991, further to a new fire having caused(provoked) considerable(significant) damages, the monument was totally restored. In 2017, the coverage(cover) and the inside of the chapel of the canoness were restored under the control of DRAC.
