Grand Canal, Dublin 2 (exact location to be confirmed), Co. Dublin – Dublin City
Show on the map
17 - 18 August 2025
Overview

Join photographer Darragh Shanahan and Waterways Ireland’s Programme Officer, Louise Dredge, to explore some of the key points of connection along Dublin’s Grand Canal through the art of pinhole photography. We’ll look at how the canal and its crossings – bridges, locks and more – have helped shape the city since their development in the 18th century and, using handmade pinhole cameras, invite participants to capture the many fascinating heritage features that remain. With these pinhole cameras (i.e. without a lens), you’ll learn how to work with natural light and composition to create unique images. On day two, at Photo Museum Ireland, we’ll dive deeper into the history and science of photography and enable you to bring your images to life in the museum’s darkroom, leaving with your own set of memorable prints. Saturday 17th August, 11:00-14:00: Walk, Talk and Photography along the Grand Canal in Dublin city centre Sunday 18th August, 11:00-14:00: Talk, Tour and Workshop at Photo Museum Ireland, Meeting House Square, Dublin 2. Please note: This two-day workshop is free to attend but please only sign up if you are able to attend on both days. All equipment and materials will be provided. As day one will take place outdoors, please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear. If you have any support needs, please contact us in advance so that we can best accommodate you. Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
