DSV Law Firm — Électrorail head office
At the request of the Empain Group, architect Antoine Courtens drew up plans for a new building to house Electrorail’s headquarters. A pupil of Victor Horta, he had already designed the Palais de la Folle Chanson, as well as the Hôtel Haerens, which was under construction when work began on Rue de l’Association, two fine examples of the Art Deco style in Brussels. He naturally turned to his architectural background to design the facade, whose ground floor of small granite is pierced by six high bays with bush-hammered stone frames. It supports three storeys of white stone, punctuated by ten colossal engaged columns whose fluting emphasises the building’s vertical momentum; the whole is crowned by a projecting cornice topped by an attic with thirteen bays, each pierced by a window. One opening, over the garage door, and the front entrance, have retained their hammered wrought-iron decoration, typical of Art Deco. Formerly occupied by the European Bank for Latin America, the building now houses a law firm. In collaboration with Klare Lijn. Photographs are not permitted.
