Overview

St Columba's Church and Monastic Site Drumcliffe and Final Resting Place of W.B Yeats.

A community-led tourism initiative, with qualified on-site guides, and multi-lingual audio guides sharing the rich history of the sites monastic beginnings that date back from 574 AD.

With visitors, we explore the mythological stories embedded in the landscape that inspired Ireland's first Nobel prize-winning poet W.B. Yeats.
St Columba's church is named after one of Ireland's three patron saints St Columcille, also known as the patron saint of poetry, we tell the story of the 'Battle of The Books' Ireland's first copy rights dispute that resulted in the battle on the slopes of the nearby iconic mountain of Benbulben, where it is believed thousands were killed as a result. For many, it is a visit to grave of W.B. Yeats to read his famous self penned epitaph and learn a little about the life and works of the poet, but there is so much more to explore.

St Columba's Church built in 1809, is open to the public and The Pink Clover award-winning Café is open Monday to Friday, there is also an art gallery on-site where visitors can meet the local artists and and purchase a little something to take home. Parking is free and adjacent to the site.

Opening hours are 9 -5, Monday to Sunday, during Heritage Week we are offering free admission with audio guides and daily guided tours subject to request.
