Overview

Since December 12th, 2015, the Unterlinden museum benefits from a new case: the old(former) convent presents the old(former) art and the works of art. The contemporary building(ship) is devoted to collections of modern art and to temporary exhibitions(exposures). An underground gallery connecting(binding) the convent with the modern building shows a panorama of the art of the 19th and of the beginning of the 20th century. The Unterlinden museum will propose a route(course) of visit with rich collections covering about 7000 years of history(story), of the Prehistory (at about 5500 years before our era) in the art of the 20th century. The Unterlinden museum is known for its remarkable collection of paintings(paints) and of sculptures of Middle Ages and of Renaissance: artists' works of the upper Rhine, of Bavaria or of Germany of the North (Martin Schongauer, Lucas Cranach, Holbein the Old(Former)). Numerous visitors come admire the famous head - of work, the Retable d' Issenheim (Grünewald for the painted panels(signs) and Nicolas de Haguenau for sculptures) realised between 1512 and 1516, for the commanderie of the Antonines of Issenheim, located in the South of Colmar. The collection of decorative arts presents a set(group) representative of the production of earthenware and china from the east of France, treasures of secular and religious silver, of the painting(paint) under glass and musical instruments. The collection of paintings(paints) of the 19th century exposes(explains) big(great) artistic currents. Most kinds(genres) are represented: the painting(paint) of history(story), the still life and the portrait through a rich collection of miniatures.
