Overview

The History of the Abbey of Notre-Dame de l'Œlenberg began in the 11th century. It was listed as a historic monument in 1992\\. Even today, a community of Cistercian monks lives there according to the rule of St Benedict. Of the buildings of the past, there remain important elements: the lower part of the choir of the chapel of the XIIth century, the transept of the old abbey church (1486) and its baroque nave (1755). A procession cross from the 12th century, a large crucifix from the 14th century and two beautiful statues of Our Lady from the 15th and 18th centuries are also preserved. Nowadays, the monastery has an important library of more than one hundred thousand books.
